Swallow chicks flown

Swallows, eagerly welcomed symbols of Spring, perhaps merge into the background in August (their screams dominate The Archers on Radio 4 right now!) but some of them are just about to finishing a last brood of young before migration. So it’s a crucial time. After their first flights, the chicks have to master eating on the wing, avoiding predators and local navigation… before they start international travel!

The family of swallows at my place have just fledged 4 chicks. They nested on a platform close to the front door. Just before they left the nest, I took a quick 4-second video clip below, now on YouTube. (Sorry it’s such a short clip, but I didn’t want to stress the parents who were never very far off.)
