Are you a keen bird watcher? The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is a chance for you to try your hand at a simple but scientific way to record local birds. Run by the BTO, it’s a nationwide monitoring scheme, so your bird counts would go towards the UK database!
The BTO measures the fortunes of our feathered friends from year to year, by using the BBS figures.
You can make a real contribution to science with just 3 bird walks in your area… and there are lots of places in need of BBS volunteers.
Berkshire’s BTO reps, for example, sent me a map showing lots of places where they have volunteer vacancies. There are two BBS transects (1km squares) going spare near Lambourn (su3479) and Brightwalton (su4280). Because I survey another Lambourn square I’m willing to coach new people trying their first survey at those spots. Contact me if you’re interested!
Experienced birders please contact the Berkshire BTO reps – Ken and Sarah.
