Scaly Male Fern (Dryopteris affinis) is easy to mix up with the commoner Male Fern (Dryopteris filix-mas) so here is a picture, labelled with a few key identification features.

Scaly Male Fern was one of the species identified on my latest session of Natureheads nature coaching. My latest student and I also noted the songs of different birds (my favourite sighting was a group of Goldfinch and Lesser Redpoll feeding upside-down on birch) and examined the condition of different habitats in early spring.
