What does a Barn Owl pellet look like?

Barn Owl pellet with £2 coin (click to enlarge)

Picture of a pellet, next to a £2 coin. This disgusting yet fascinating item has been regurgitated by a Barn Owl. It contains the remains of prey which the owl was unable to digest – mainly fur and bones in this case.

At first all you can make out from its appearance is perhaps the fur. But to discover the bones all you have to do is soak the pellet in soapy water for a while and pick it apart with tweezers… very educational. Wear plastic gloves and remember to wash your hands!
